CHENNAI: A monk, a Buddhist one at that, is all spiritual? Completely detached from worldly affairs? Certainly turning his back on the silver screen?

Perish the thought. For here comes Hase Kawa from Osaka, a die-hard fan of superstar Rajnikanth and who has come all the way from Japan to watch Chandramukhi.

The medium-built but broad-shouldered Kawa, clad in a T-shirt and jeans, says airily: ‘‘He’s a fantastic hero. He sweeps us all off our feet. What if I’m a monk, I enjoy his films, and I am willing to go to the other end of the world to watch them...And so are my friends here with me...’’

Ever since ‘Muthu’ hit the Japanese theatres a decade ago, Kawa had actually travelled to Chennai at least eight times to watch as many Rajni films as possible and hopefully meet him too. He has not succeeded so far. But that would not deter him from coming here.

A rendezvous with their idol, even if they have to content themselves with seeing him on the screen, is still a cherished moment for them.

The five flew in on the eve of the release of ‘Chandramukhi’. Well, on the opening day, they didn’t exactly succeed in their efforts to get tickets.

They moved from one theatre to another, but to no effect. Only ‘Houseful’ boards greeted them everywhere. Even the ever-trustworthy black market let them down badly. There was no ticket on the offer anywhere.

When this reporter caught up with them in the afternoon, they were a bit downcast.

‘‘We didn’t want to wait till the film is released there. Hence we flew in, but no luck....Oh what efforts we had taken...What excuses we had offered to get away...Hmm,’’ the five sighed longingly. But as they sat sipping their tea in a restaurant, a local contact of their came running to them, all excitement. Of course he was waving a bunch of tickets, and they all broke out in unison, ‘‘Hurrah.’’ Yeah, they would now see their favourite hero’s film the next city. The rendezvous had only been postponed.

Miyura, a software engineer, had told his office back in Osaka in Japan that he had a family errand to attend to in India. Swinging to Rajini’s evergreen hit ‘Autokkaaran’ from ‘Basha’, played in the hotel, he said, ‘‘You see, I have come with a lot of expectation just to watch our hero’s film. I am sure he will not disappoint me.’’ Sima, a film critic in the group, explained: ‘‘People over there like his frillless, simple, straight acting. They indeed find him better than even Hollywood heroes, refreshingly different from the flock they are used to. Ever since ‘Muthu’ was released as an experimental measure in the nineties, believe me he has become a rage, among different sections…there are eight fan clubs for him in our country...’’

Oonishi, a fashion designer, displaying a childlike glee with her saree ‘pallu,’ carrying Rajnikanth’s image and the ‘Chandramukhi’ title, said in broken Tamil: ‘‘ I do not know any language other than Japanese. But I have been learning Tamil for the last few months just to watch Rajni movies.’’

She went on to sing a few snatches of ‘Devuda Devuda’ from ‘Chandramukhi’. ‘‘I cannot wait to watch the movie, I bet it will be a hit.’’

Pressed further on what she found in the actor so fascinating, Oonishi gushed: ‘‘Oh, what else but style. So much élan and such agility in his movements. He simply throbs with life..,’’ she said, adding with a blush ‘‘He is sooo sexy.’’

One look at them would suffice to make you understand that they had gone gaga with the Tamil superstar. Be it their bracelet, chain, T-shirt, everything about them seemed to bear the legend ‘Chandramukhi’ or Rajni’s face. ‘‘We will keep shopping for more and more memorabilia,’’ they declared while flaunting their ‘Chandramukhi’ badges too. Construction contractor, Kuwa Bara said: ‘‘I have a collection of his film DVDs and now I have come here to watch the movie in a theatre for that unique experience.’’

They had met each other through Subramaniam, a Tamil, running a restaurant in Osaka. He explains: ‘‘I had posted details about ‘Chandramukhi’ on the Internet and these people came rushing to me pressing me for an opportunity to watch it here in Tamil Nadu, fresh from the oven, as it were...and so I’ve brought them here.’’

Incidentally, Subramaniam, who also teaches Tamil in Japan, disclosed that many people over there were actually learning the language just to be able to follow better Rajni’s films and enjoy them more. And the last word should go to the monk of course. Asked whether he would pray for the new film’s success, Hase Kawa retorted, almost impatiently: ‘‘I don’t have to. You see, he has some special spiritual powers and that will ensure the film’s success.’’ Amen.

CHENNAI : Only one man can, in a moment make you forget that you just spent Rs. 225 for a ticket to watch the first day, first show of his movie at a theatre where you have to share your seat with a bed-bug, a beetle and a colony of ants. This one man can, with his smile, put one on you with just a swish of his finger, and in his inimitable style. This man can, as is evident from the response in the halls on Friday, rise like a phoenix and return to the throne that he occupied not too long ago. But then, he's not just a `man.' When the alphabets S-U-P-E-R-S-T-A-R appeared on the screen after over three years, newspapers turned confetti, fingers turned whistles, fans turned dancers and Superstar Rajnikant turned demi-godThe last time this happened, `Padayappa' went on to rule for over 225 days. `Chandramukhi' started with a bang -- a Matrix style stunt sequence and fans went euphoric. The ecstasy continued when Superstar shook hip to `Devuda Devuda.' Soon Superstar's comic interludes with Vadivelu rocked the house. The excitement was infectious, as fans cheered, danced in the aisles and rushed towards the screen at every opportunity to shower it with confetti. This despite the fact that the film had absolutely no politically loaded statements or finger-gimmickry. Just subdued punchlines, a strong script cleverly adapted from `Manichitrathazhu' and Superstar at his vintage best.Superstar plays Saravanan, a psychiatrist who returns to India after a long stint in America, just in time to come to the aid of his best friend Senthil (Prabhu) when he moves into a mansion haunted by the ghost of a dancer Chandramukhi.

ரஜினியின் 152வது படம் "சந்திரமுகி'. "பாபா' படம் எதிர்பார்த்த வெற்றியை அடையாததால் அடுத்த படம் அசத்தலான அதிரடியான படமாக இருக்க வேண்டும் என்று நினைத்த ரஜினி, "படையப்பா' கொடுத்த கே.எஸ். ரவிகுமார் இயக்கதில் ஜக்குபாயை ஆரம்பித்தார். அந்த நேரம் பார்த்து டைரக்டர் பி. வாசுவின் "சந்திரமுகி' பிடித்துப் போக, உடனடியாக கால்ஷீட் கொடுத்ததோடு கூடுதல் கவனம் செலுத்தி நடித்திருக்கிறார்.

படத்தின் ஆடியோ வெளியீட்டு விழாவில் ரஜினி பேசும்போது, ""வாழ்க்கையில் மூன்று விஷயங்களின் அருமை நம்மை விட்டுப் பிரிந்துபோன பின்புதான் தெரியும். ஒன்று இளமை. இன்னொன்று ஆரோக்யம். அடுத்தது நல்ல நேரம் என்றவர், ""பாபா படம் சரியாக போகவில்லை. உடனே, "ஓகோ... அண்ணன் ஆடி போய்ட்டார் என்று நினைத்தார்கள். நான் யானை அல்ல குதிரை, யானை விழுந்தால் எழுந்து கொள்ள நேரம் ஆகும். நான் குதிரை என்பதால் உடனே எழுந்து கொண்டேன்'' என்றார்.

"சந்திரமுகி' ஆரம்பித்த நாள் முதலே ரஜினி உற்சாகமாகிவிட்டார். அவருடைய மகள் ஐஸ்வர்யா கல்யாணத்துக்கும் நடுவே படப்பிடிப்புக்கு எந்தத் தடங்கலும் இல்லாமல் பார்த்துக் கொண்டார்.

இந்தப் படத்தில் ரஜினியின் "சிகரெட் ஸ்டைல்' இருக்காது. அதேபோல அரசியல் வசனமும் "நோ'.

ஆனால் மும்பை அஞ்சாசன், சென்னை கக்கின்ஸ், கிருஷ்ணன், சிட்டி ஆகிய நான்கு உடை அலங்கார நிபுணர்கள் ஸ்பெஷலாக உழைக்க, ரஜினி படு ஸ்டைலாக வலம் வந்திருக்கிறார்.

குருவாயூரில் கிடைத்த கிஃப்ட்

ரஜினி நடித்த "பணக்காரன்', "உழைப்பாளி', "மன்னன்' ஆகிய படங்களை இயக்கிய டைரக்டர் பி. வாசுவுக்கு இது ஐம்பதாவது படமாம். தான் ரஜினி படத்தை டைரக்ட் பண்ணப் போகிற "சூப்பர்' சமாசாரத்தை குருவாயூர் கோவிலில் இருந்தபோது கேட்டு மகிழ்ந்திருக்கிறார். "சந்திரமுகி' அனுபவம் பற்றி வாசுவிடம் கேட்டோம்.

""சென்சார்ல படம் பார்த்தவங்க படத்தைப் பற்றி பிரமாதமாச் சொன்னாங்க. படத்தின் ஆரம்பத்திலிருந்து இறுதிவரை திரையை விட்டு கண்கள் அகலவில்லை என்றார்கள். அந்த அளவிற்கு படத்தில் டெம்போ இருக்கிறது. ரசிகர்களுக்கு ஏற்ற விருந்தாக இது இருக்கும்.

முதலில் நான் இந்தக் கதையை சிவாஜி பிலிம்ஸ் ராம்குமார்கிட்டே சொன்னேன். அவர் அதைக் கேட்டு அசந்துபோனார். மும்பை போய் சந்தோஷி மூலமா ஹிந்தி நடிகர்களிடம் கதையைச் சொல்லி அங்கே இதை எடுக்கலாம்னு முடிவு செய்தார் ராம்குமார்.

சந்தோஷியிடம் விவரத்தைச் சொன்னோம். அவரும் மார்ச், ஏப்ரலில் எடுக்கலாம் என்றார். இந்தச் சூழ்நிலையில்தான் ரஜினி சாருக்கு "க்ளிக்' ஆயிடுச்சி.

இந்தக் கதை, யார் நடித்தாலும் ஓட வேண்டும் என்ற கண்ணோட்டத்துடன் உருவானது. ஆனால் அதற்கு ரஜினியே அமைந்துவிட்டார். அவர் இந்தப் படத்தில் படு சுறுசுறுப்பாக, பிரமாதமாக நடித்திருக்கிறார். சண்டைக் காட்சிகளில் அனல் பறக்கும். அந்த அளவுக்கு எடுக்கப்பட்டிருக்கிறது.

ரஜினியின் அழகை இது வெளிப்படுத்தும். படம் முழுக்க சிறுவர்கள் முதல் பெரியவர்கள் வரை பார்க்கின்ற அளவுக்கு சுவாரஸ்யமான விஷயங்கள் நிறைய இருக்கின்றன.

இது எனக்குத் திடீர்னு கிடைத்த படம். இதில் வேலை செய்தது நல்ல அனுபவம். படுஸ்பீடாக படப்பிடிப்புகள் நடத்தி முடித்தோம். அதேபோல போஸ்ட் புரொடக்ஷன்ஸ் வேலைகளும் நினைத்ததைவிட வேகமாக நடந்து முடிந்தன. இப்போது பர்ஸ்ட் காப்பி சென்சார் முடிந்துவிட்டது. எல்லோரும் பார்க்கிற அளவுக்கு "யு' சர்ட்டிபிகேட் வழங்கியுள்ளனர்'' என்றார் வாசு பெருமிதத்தோடு.

தண்ணீரும், ஆக்ஸிஜனும் ரஜினி!

வீனஸ் பிக்சர்ஸýடன் சேர்ந்து ஐம்பது ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பு ஹிந்தியில் "அமர்தீப்' என்ற படத்தை முதன்முதலாகத் தயாரித்த சிவாஜி பிலிம்ஸ், தனது பொன்விழா ஆண்டாக "சந்திரமுகி' படத்தைத் தயாரிக்கிறது. ஏற்கனவே "மன்னன்' படத்தைத் தயாரித்த பிரபு, இப்போது ரஜினியை வைத்து "சந்திரமுகி'யை தயாரித்திருக்கிறார். படத்தில் செந்தில் என்ற கேரக்டரில் நடித்திருக்கிறார்.

அவரிடம் "சந்திரமுகி' அனுபவம் பற்றிக் கேட்ட போது, ""எங்க அப்பா எங்களுக்கு விட்டுப் போன சொத்து நட்பு, அன்பு, பாசம். அதுதான் இன்றைக்கு எல்லோரையும் வாழ வைத்திருக்கிறது'' என்று நெகிழ்ச்சியுடன் ஆரம்பித்தார்.

இந்த உலகத்தில் வாழ்வதற்கு தண்ணீர், ஆக்ஸிஜன் தேவை. அந்த தண்ணீரும், ஆக்ஸிஜ'னுமாக இருப்பவர் சூப்பர் ஸ்டார் ரஜினிசார். அவர் பர்ஃபெக்ட் ஜென்டில்மேன். அவர் நல்லா இருக்க வேண்டுமென்று எங்கள் குடும்பம் பிரார்த்தனை செய்து கொண்டே இருக்கும்.

இந்தப் படத்தில் சரவணன் என்ற கேரக்டரில் ரஜினி சார் நடித்துள்ளார். நான் செந்தில் என்ற கேரக்டரில் நடித்திருக்கிறேன். அவர் படத்தில் அடிக்கடி "சரவணன் இருக்க பயமேன்' என்று டயலாக் பேசுவார். கண்டிப்பாக அவர் இருக்கும் வரை எங்களுக்குப் பயமில்லை.

இந்த படம் ஆரம்பித்ததும் முடிந்ததும் எவ்வளவு வேகமாக நடந்திருக்கிறது என்று நினைக்கும்போது ஆச்சர்யமாக இருக்கிறது. சிவாஜி பிலிம்ஸின் பொன்விழா ஆண்டுப் படமாக "சந்திரமுகி' திரைக்கு வருகிறது. இப்படம் வெள்ளிவிழா காணும். அந்த விழாவில் என் அனுபவங்களைப் பேசினால் இன்னும் நன்றாக இருக்கும் என நினைக்கிறேன்'' என்று கம்பீரமாகச் சொன்னார் பிரபு.

"ஜோதிகா இஸ் எ நைஸ் கேர்ள்'

""ரஜினி சாருடன் ஜோடியாக நடிப்பேன் என்று கனவில்கூட நினைக்கவில்லை'' ஆரம்பித்த நயன்தாரா, இது எனக்குக் கிடைத்த நல்ல அற்புதமான வாய்ப்பு. இந்தப் படம் என் வாழ்க்கையில் மறக்க முடியாத ஒரு சூப்பர் அனுபவம் என்று சொல்லலாம். நிறையச் சொல்ல வேண்டும் என்று ஆசையாக இருக்கிறது. பொருத்தமான வார்த்தைகள் கிடைக்காமல் தவிக்கிறேன்.

இந்தப் படத்தில் எனக்கு மூன்று பாடல்கள். இரண்டு பாடல்களை துருக்கி நாட்டில் படமாக்கி உள்ளனர். என்னுடன் படத்தில் நடித்த ஜோதிகா இஸ் எ வெரி நைஸ் கேர்ல். அவரை எனக்கும், என்னை அவருக்கும் மிகவும் பிடித்துப்போய்விட்டது.

பிரபு சார், டைரக்டர் பி. வாசுசார் என எல்லோரும் கொடுத்த ஒத்துழைப்பை என்னால் மறக்கவே முடியாது. நல்ல யூனிட், அற்புதமான படம். என்றென்றும் நினைவில் நிற்கின்ற அனுபவமாக அமைந்திருக்கிறது "சந்திரமுகி' அனுபவங்கள்'' என்றார் அழகான புன்சிரிப்போடு.

Fans snap up tickets for blockbusters

CHENNAI, APRIL 11. Tamil New Year's Day this year will see more fireworks than any Deepavali in the past few years, at least as far as the cinema is concerned.

Tickets have already been sold out for the first few days, within minutes of the counters opening for advance booking.

Superstar Rajnikant is back after a gap of three years. Kamal Haasan's laugh riot `Mumbai Express' will be released on the same day. Vijay's `Sachien' comes close on the heels of his last three hits `Gilli,' `Madurae' and `Tirupaachi.'

Muni Kanaiya, Sathyam multiplex manager, says the cinema has already sold 18,000 tickets for `Mumbai Express' (playing at Sathyam), since the booking counter opened today, and had closed counters for `Chandramukhi' (playing at Santham) after 22,000 tickets were sold for the first 10 days.

Admission rates


"The booking is full for four days for `Mumbai Express.' The rates of admission have been increased to Rs.80, Rs.70 and Rs.60 at Sathyam. The tickets at Santham are now Rs.90 and Rs.70," he adds. Tickets for `Sachien' too, have been sold out, in advance, for a week. `Chandramukhi' will be screened in eight city theatres — four shows a day and two shows a day at Subham. Kamal Haasan's film will be shown in nine theatres — four shows a day and two shows at Prarthana, and `Sachien' will play in six theatres — four shows a day — and three shows in Kamala.

With the government allowing an extra show on holidays, all theatres will have an extra morning show on April 14, 16, and 17. `Sathya Jothi' Thyagarajan, Tamil Film Producers Council president said that the official crackdown against video piracy is one of the reasons that three of the big stars of the Tamil film industry are coming out with their films simultaneously.

Promotional teasers have further hyped up `Chandramukhi,' which marks the 50th year for Sivaji productions. It is also director P. Vasu's 50th film.

Actor Parthiban, who has seen "Mumbai Express," says that it has all the ingredients for a hit and plenty of comedy. "It is a high class comedy. If only Dr. Ramadoss and Mr. Thirumavalavan see the film, they will forget about the name and laugh to their heart's content. I have today sent a letter to both of them asking them to see it."

Vijay has said that his latest is a love story with a difference. "I do not want to be stereo-typed with action films. So I wanted to do a love story. That was the time Johan came to me with `Sachien,' I immediately agreed."
